Therapy Approaches

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

CBT is one of the most common and well known evidence-based models. It is based on the idea that our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are all related and influence each other. It is a skills based treatment model that helps us to recognize and challenge unhelpful thinking and behavior patterns. CBT explores the mind body connection and allows us to better take control over ourselves and improve relationships with others.

CBT is effective in the treatment of depression, trauma, anxiety, eating disorders, behavior and emotion regulation disorders (i.e. ADHD, conduct disorders).

Eye-Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

EMDR is an evidence-based approach to help with processing traumatic memories that are continuing to cause distress to clients. Unlike typical talk therapies, EMDR does not require clients to recount target memories in detail, rather they briefly focus on the memory while also being guided to engage in bilateral stimulation (i.e. eye movements, vibration pulser, auditory tones). This helps to desensitize and reduce emotional response to the memory.

EMDR has been found effective for treating many disorders, including PTSD, anxiety, depression, grief and loss, and more.

Play Therapy

Play therapy is an evidence-based approach that utilizes a variety of techniques to engage clients of all ages in processing on emotions, trauma, unhelpful thoughts, behavior modification, etc. Play therapy uses books, media, games, art, fidgets, and other mediums to help clients better express themselves and explore experiences. Play therapy helps teach alternative strategies for coping, improving self- management, and socialization.

Play therapy can be used in treating trauma, behavioral disorders, anxiety, depression,

attachment issues, divorce processing, etc.

Other thoughts..

Clinician uses person-centered approaches with all clients. She believes therapeutic work cannot truly be done without a strong rapport and working relationship. Goal setting is done collaboratively with the client and can be changed at any time as needed.

Clinician has experience working from a Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) approach as well, and at times will rely on that framework to teach skills around mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotional regulation, and communication. While this is not the main theory, it pairs well with the other approaches and can help instill further introspection and progress for clients.
